Sports, Remedial and Pregnancy Massage
We have four astounding massage therapists who are all very experienced and are registered with the required professional bodies.
What sets massage therapy at Northcote Chiropractic apart from others is, it is specific for your particular problem. With our One Body Philosophy, our massage therapists work alongside our Chiropractors, as we feel that this enhances the care of the patient by releasing toxins and muscle tension. Joints and muscles work along side each other, if there is a dysfunction within the joint then it will pull on the muscles and if there is dysfunction within the muscle it will affect the joint and movement patterns.
“Our massage techniques range from Sports Massage, Swedish/Deep Tissue Massage, Relaxation Massage and Pregnancy Massage.”
So what do we do differently?
At a beauty spa you are normally offered a regular massage, and while this type of massage has its purpose (most massage therapists can give a regular massage), to provide a sports or remedial massage you need to have undertaken further study and qualifications.
Here at Northcote Chiropractic it is your choice if you would like a regular massage or a more specialised massage, you do not need to see the Chiropractor to have a massage, although our massage therapists do work alongside our Chiropractors.
The types of massages we offer are:
Remedial Massage
This massage holistically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort as far as possible back to the original cause, healing both the cause of the disorder as well as the symptoms. This type of massage can be gentle or strong, deep or shallow depending on your needs and problems.
Sport Massage
This is a treatment is given with the understanding of not only anatomy and physiology but also the demands that specific training places on the body. This type of massage will often utilise a variety of deeper techniques such as remedial massage, trigger point therapy, cross fibre techniques and deep tissue work. The main difference of sports massage is the focus on function and returning to or enhancing sport performance.
The reasons for having pre and post event sport massage include:
- Reduce the chance of injury
- Improve power and performance by increasing muscular flexibility and joint range of motion
- Increase vascular flow to tissues, maximizing nutrient and oxygen supply
- Improve elimination of lactic and carbonic waste products, which result from muscle contraction during physical activity
- Shorten recovery time post event
“If you haven’t ever experienced a quality sport or remedial massage, we thoroughly recommend it.”
Sports and remedial massage can help the following problems:
- Back/Neck pain
- Tension headaches
- Jaw pain
- Plantar-Fasciitis
- Tennis/golfers elbow
- Arthritis
- Frozen shoulder
- Sciatica
- Muscular spasms
- DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness)
Massage encourages blood flow to the tissues being treated by stimulating the circulatory system, which works closely with the lymphatic system (your rubbish system). Therefore massage will promote reduced pain and swelling by improving your lymphatic system.
What’s the Best Timing for a Massage?
Remedial massage can be done at anytime however if there is a recent injury we suggest 72 hours after the event. During this time rest and ice therapy is the best approach.
Sports Massage Pre-Event: Pre-event massages that require deep tissue techniques should occur no later than 48 to 72 hours before the planned exercise event.
Sports Massage Post-Event: Less than 24 hours after event softer techniques such as Swedish massage will be used. 24 to 72 hours following an event, the therapist will commonly take a deeper approach.
How Long Should You Book for Massage?
The choice is of course yours, however we would recommend:
- 30-minutes is sufficient time to treat one problem area, eg: neck and shoulders
- 45-60 minute appointments are sufficient for 2-3 areas, eg: lower back, neck and shoulders
- 60-90 minutes will cover a full body treatment

“I came to see the team for some emergency treatment after a sports injury. Initial consultation was professional and quickly diagnosed the issue.
Having now successfully treated the injury I come for a sports massage 1 or 2 times a month to prevent further problems.
Brilliant, I strongly recommend if you have back problems or sports injuries.

“I have had several massages by Evelyn and she really knows her stuff. Particularly my hip flexor which the excellent Emma, (one of the Chiropractors who looks after me) said I needed work on.
I am much better as a result. Highly recommended.

“A lovely haven of superb professionals. My whole family (including baby) regularly come here for chiro with Delphine and we’re better for it.
They are also the best masseuses in London.
